Contacts & custom fields
Your customer list — how to get people in, keep opt-in clean, and attach the data you want to target on later.
What a contact holds
| Field | What it is |
|---|---|
| Phone | With country code, no + or spaces needed — e.g. 919876543210. This is the unique key; re-importing the same number updates the existing contact. |
| Name | Shown in the inbox and usable as a template variable. |
| Tags | Free-text labels, many per contact. The main way you slice your audience. |
| Status | Opted in (can receive campaigns) or Opted out (skipped everywhere until they opt in again). |
| Custom fields | Any extra columns you define — see below. |
| Added | When the contact first entered your list. |
Importing contacts
Open Contacts → Upload contacts
Sidebar → 📇 Contacts. Use the Upload a .csv file picker, or paste rows into the text box.
Match the format
Columns are phone, name, tags. Separate multiple tags with a pipe. One contact per line:
9876543210,Ramesh Traders,vip|mumbai9123456780,Priya Textiles,pune
Confirm consent
Tick “I confirm I have consent to message this list”. You are stating these are existing customers or people who explicitly opted in. Everyone imported is marked opted in.
This is a Meta requirement, not a formality — messaging people without consent drives your quality rating down fast.
Save and check the result
Click 📇 Save Contacts. The Recent import/export activity card shows how many rows were added, updated or skipped.
Campaigns can also add numbers directly from a pasted list. Those are added to Contacts as opted-in too — anyone who previously opted out is still skipped.
Managing contacts
- Edit a contact from the table to fix a name or phone, or fill in custom-field values.
- Export CSV downloads your whole list, including custom fields — useful as a backup or to bulk-edit and re-import.
- To opt someone out, edit them or let a chatbot Action step do it. Opted-out contacts stay in your list for history but receive nothing.
Custom fields
Custom fields let you track whatever matters to your business — membership tier, renewal date, company size, last purchase amount — and then target on it in a campaign.
Open the Custom fields card
On the Contacts tab, scroll to ⚙️ Custom fields and click Manage ▾.
Add a field
Give it a label (e.g. Membership Tier) and a type — Text, Number or Date. Click ➕ Add Field.
The type decides which comparisons you get later: Number and Date allow greater than / less than, Text allows is / is not / contains.
Fill in values per contact
Use Edit on any contact row — the custom fields appear in the edit dialog. Or set them in bulk by exporting, filling the column, and re-importing.
Target on it
In a campaign's audience builder, click ➕ Add custom field condition and pick the field, a comparison, and a value. Combine several conditions to narrow the audience.
Tags answer "which group is this?"; custom fields answer "what is this contact's value for X?". Use tags for campaign themes and customer types, custom fields for dates and numbers you compare against.
